Susi Q without Walls
“When one door closes….” The COVID-19 pandemic forced us to close the Susi Q, but also showed us a new way to serve the community. Within weeks, we had launched the Susi Q without Walls” which kept us connected and active. Today, members enjoy the option to participate remotely in our activities and programs. And so the Susi Q Without Walls is now a permanent extension of our mission.
The “Susi Q Without Walls” included the following:
- Online program registration
40 programs became “virtual” offerings with over 700 weekly participants while the Susi Q was closed. We now offer over 60 programs using online, in-person, and hybrid options.
- Equipping seniors with technology: the iPad Project
With generous funding from the Assistance League of Laguna Beach, LBS purchased 14 iPads for low income seniors at Vista Aliso and Alice Court to digitally connect them to the community, the Susi Q Without Walls, and the Susi Q. LBS also provided free internet connections and training.
- New website
Laguna Beach Seniors launched a simple but dynamic website that allows viewers with limited computer experience to easily access information and sign up for our activities, programs, and services. Our new website utilizes the latest Web technology for easy integration with social media.
- Equipping classrooms with technology
In order to create a professional, functional, and accessible environment for both in-person and online participation, we worked with a professional audio/video company to make significant upgrades to several of our rooms. This project was funded by a generous legacy gift from the estate of Al Roberts.
- Lifelong Laguna
We were able to open The Susi Q Without Walls quickly because of our experience with Lifelong Laguna, the aging-in-place program we launched in 2016. Lifelong Laguna reaches beyond the walls of the Susi Q to help older residents live safely at home — a mission that became more vital than ever during the pandemic.
